JOB & PERSON SPECIFICATION JOB SPECIFICATION:
ROLE: Senior Winemaker
DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Niagara Falls
REPORTING TO: Director of Operations, Niagara Falls and Chief Winemaker Vincor Canada
LOCATION: Niagara Falls is located at the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, near the US border (on the East coast)
STATUS: Permanent Full Time
JOB PURPOSE
To be responsible for all winemaking activities at Niagara Falls and produce wines to required quality standards, volume requirements and regulatory requirements.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
• Production of a full range of tables wines and some icewines (brands include Sawmill Creek, Ancient Coast and Jackson-Triggs) from the VQA Premium ($10-$50 per bottle) to Commercial ($7-$10 per bottle) wines; • Provision of contract services to the estate wineries; • Responsibility for four direct and 10 indirect staff and vintage casuals; • Management of the winemaking operating budget; • Focus on maintaining and enhancing the quality of the wine; • Responsibility for wine styles and the blending of wines; • Responsibility for maintaining the current range and further developing other brands.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
TERTIARY QUALIFICATIONS
• University degree in Oenology or a related discipline (Food Science, Sciences).
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
• Substantial winery experience, including large winery experience; • Varied technical skills required to manage the process of making large volumes of blended wines, premium and ultra premium wines, coolers, ciders and icewines; • Experience using JD Edwards or another similar integrated ERP system (not essential); • Experience working with cool climate wines

• Ability to communicate and interact with a range of people, both inside and outside the organisation; • Ability to work across different divisions and at different levels; • Ability to work and/or meet the requirements of third party agencies (eg The Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Vintners Quality Alliance.); • Able to give direction, mentor and delegate to staff; • Able to manage the people side of the cellar and be assertive; • Ability to motivate staff and work in a unionised environment; • Well developed leadership skills; • General management skills – operations, people, budget; • Ability to multi task and meet deadlines (VQA, Estate – contract wines and blending); • Strong problem solving skills; • An analytical approach; • Technically astute; • Commercial nous/aptitude, • Dynamic and flexible approach; • Passion for winemaking. FURTHER INFORMATION
• The winery has full facilities re making, storing and bottling of products; • The bottling function is ISO and HACCP accredited; • Crush is approximately 10,000 tonnes of grapes; • This role is responsible for a wine inventory of $10,000,000; • The annual budget is $1m; • The winery produces approximately three million cases of table wines, fortifieds and coolers.

In addition to the day-to-day management of winemaking and operations, the role requires working closely with viticulture, marketing and the supply chain and contributing to the company’s ongoing objective of being the superior Canadian wine producer. Of major importance will be a focus on implementing quality initiatives to further develop the position of the brands and the team.
For this exciting and challenging role, you will need to have excellent winemaking skills as well as outstanding leadership abilities and the communication expertise necessary to lead a diverse range of employees. Your interpersonal skills and ability to liaise across different divisions and at different levels will also be imperative for your success. A relevant degree qualification is required.
